Time Commitment

The time commitment for UWET is a perfect balance between work and play, providing team members with several opportunities to ride, while still maintaining plenty of time for their studies. 

LESSONS

Team members are divided into lesson groups of 5 people, taking one hour-long lesson a week with the Coach.  If the Coach must cancel a lesson due to an emergency or unsafe weather conditions, the lesson will be rescheduled for a later date in the semester.  If a rider misses their lesson, they are responsible to make up this lesson on their own.  Make-up lesson weeks are provided at various times during the year.  Open lesson spots due to rider cancellations can also be taken by a rider who needs to make up a lesson.  Lessons are held at the Hoofer Equestrian Center.

PRACTICE

The Captain of the team runs two team practices on Friday and Sunday afternoons, lasting an hour and a half.  Practices are held at the Hoofer Equestrian Center and five horses are used at each practice.  Team members switch horses throughout practice, getting riding time on a few different horses to simulate an IHSA horse show experience.  Attendance is mandatory for at least one practice per week.

**For both lessons and practices, riders must commit additional time before and after the scheduled riding time.  This includes grooming and tacking horses up before, as well as untacking and cooling down horses after.  This adds an additional hour to lessons and practices (a half hour before and a half hour after). 

TRANSPORTATION

The Hoofer Equestrian Center is located in Belleville, WI, which is about 30 minutes away from the UW Campus.  Team members carpool to the barn for lessons and practices, so owning a car is not necessary to be on the team.

HORSE SHOWS

UWET usually competes in about ten horse shows throughout the school year, which take up roughly five weekends. As riders continue to improve and show dedication to the team, show teams will change throughout the school year, so not every team member will be at each show. UWET also hosts horse shows on two weekends, one in the fall and one in the spring. For these horse shows, attendance is mandatory for both Saturday and Sunday in order to run the shows with ease and efficiency.

SOCIAL

Meetings are held on Wednesdays at 8 pm in the Hoofer Lounge as needed throughout the school year. Our promotional chairs also organize at least one fun social event per month in order to foster team bonding and friendship.
